LMU Stipends for LERU Doctoral Summer Schools
Since 2010 LMU Munich grants stipends for the annual LERU Doctoral Summer Schools. LERU (League of European Research Universities) is an association of 23 research-intensive universities in Europe.
This year's LERU Doctoral Summer School is hosted by Utrecht University from July 4 until July 8, 2022.
The theme of the Summer School is "The University of the Future. Rethinking the role of universities worldwide in the face of the challenges of the 21st century".
In a 21st century so far marked by crises and uncertainty, the role of the university seems in need of evaluation. Intersecting fears about ecological degradation, climate change, economics, (geo)politics, and technological change call for more inter- and transdisciplinary forms of research and education. They call for rethinking what the university is, and what it can or should be. What is the societal role of universities? Is the university primarily a place for knowledge-production and technology-development, or does it have the responsibility to contribute more actively to the handling of societal challenges? Are there optimal or inspiring new ways for universities to relate to policymakers, politics, and society at large?
The participants will be provided with a reading list early June 2022. They are expected to read the compulsory part of the list (estimated at 100 to 200 pages).
As for an output the participants of this Doctoral Summer School will be asked to jointly write a manifesto, to be offered to LERU and high-level recipients as a source for reflection and further debate. Prior to the summer school, on June 29 in the afternoon, there will be an online training session on how to write a manifesto. Course participants are required to attend.
The application deadline is March 15, 2022.
